Parenting is one of the most rewarding yet one of the most challenging experiences a person will ever have. When first born, babies don’t do a lot other than sleep, soil their diaper, eat, and yes, cry. That’s just all part of having the honor of being called Mom and Dad.

Non-stop fussing

Probably one of the hardest things to deal with as a parent is a crying baby. Especially when they have a clean diaper, just woke from a nap, and recently ate. You try everything but on occasion, nothing you do makes them stop. This is especially true for an infant with colic.

Why all the crying?

As mentioned, the most common reasons for a crying baby are hunger, fatigue, a dirty diaper, and colic. But there are others. For example, babies also cry because of pain, allergies, reflux, and wanting attention. Sometimes, they respond negatively when a mother or father is nervous, which is common among new parents.

Deciphering each cry

Believe it or not, the cries that babies make all sound somewhat different. Although it takes a little bit of time, parents soon learn what each one means. That makes it possible to soothe their child accordingly.

A viral video

In some cases, the thing that calms a baby down isn’t what you’d expect. That was proven in a video that’s now been viewed more than 3.7 million times. In it, you see a father and a super tiny baby that won’t stop crying.

An unusual sound

But as this father lies beside his precious baby, he discovers something. By making a weird noise, the infant almost immediately stops crying. Not only that, but the sound puts this child to sleep. While it might not work for everyone, it’s been a fantastic solution for this dad.

So, what is it?

The father hums. But it sounds like a chant using a “uhm” sound. With the baby’s head resting on the father’s shoulder, he begins humming. Boom…the baby’s cry becomes softer and quieter.

The sweetest thing ever

As you watch the video, you hear this dad holding the sound for several seconds before repeating it. This baby can’t be more than a few days old and already, this father found a way to keep them calm and relaxed. That’s impressive. Before long, the child is sound asleep.

Different opinions

As you can imagine, everyone, parents and non-parents alike have their opinion as to why this works. While some people think it’s the sound itself that lulls the infant to sleep, others feel it’s the noise plus the vibration it makes. Resting on the father’s shoulder, the baby would be able to hear and feel it.

It’s incredible

Okay, so maybe this method of getting an infant to stop crying is a bit unorthodox but if it works, why not try it. And the interesting thing…the sound the dad makes isn’t quiet. You’d think it would make the baby more upset yet it has the opposite effect.

Every child is unique

For that reason, moms and dads typically have to try several things before finding what works for their baby. Sometimes, parents will vacuum, which in a way, has the same effect. If you have a fussy baby and all else has failed, you might consider the “uhm” sound this father makes. It never hurts to try.

One important note

If at any time a child continues to cry, and especially if they run a fever, break out in a rash, or have some other usual symptom, always contact your pediatrician. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
