We learn so much from our dads. From amazing life hacks to important life lessons to cringeworthy dad jokes, they teach us every day. As we dive into a new year, the internet is looking back on all the hilarious experiences kids had with their dads.
Some of the experiences were poignant and some were downright ridiculous, but they’re all moments that make us say, “That is SO ‘Dad!”
Sure, they might not have as significant an internet following as, say, cats, or babies who snuggle with dogs, but their dad jokes keep up laughing (and groaning). After all, if your dad can’t make any situation into a really, really terrible joke, is he even a dad?
These dads are makeup experts, slang aficionados, and home hack masters. And they don’t give a hoot about embarrassing their kids. It’s all par for the course of fatherhood. But no matter what they do, they keep us smiling. And we would never want to be without them, even when they make us roll our eyes.
They might not have the best dance moves or understand how these newfangled smartphones work, but one thing will never change: we love them. Oh, and we’ll also never stop making fun of them.
This dad was pretty pumped to dig into his sandwich, not realizing he’d forgotten an important first step — the wrapper was still on. His look of shame says it’s a bit of a low point for him. But let’s be honest: which of us hasn’t been there at one time or another?
Everyone knows that kids go through phases where they obsess over toilet humor. For dads, that phase never stops. It’s scientifically proven that once a man has a child, he will take every opportunity to make a fart joke, especially if it embarrasses his kids. It’s not their fault: they just can’t resist.
This dad might want to stick to using standard mode on his camera and stop trying to get fancy. His panoramic photos of his daughter are … well, let’s just call them unfortunate. And don’t try blaming it on the camera, dad. Panoramic photography might just not be your thing.
In the age of cell phones, dads have the opportunity to call or text their family members to make sure they’re getting all the right things. Just think of all the poor dads who lived before cell phones were around. They had to just guess what they were supposed to get.
When it came to a special moment between his daughter and her fiancé-to-be, this dad just couldn’t resist putting his own fatherly spin on it. It’s obviously a joke, and we’re sure he’ll be happy to walk her down the aisle when the day comes. But now they have this ridiculous picture to remember this day by.
This dad clearly had no qualms when it came to giving his child “the talk.” But he had his own special way of doing it, and he wasn’t backing down. Oh, you want to have sex, do you? Why don’t you take a long, hard look right in the mirror, pal?
Most dads actually have this excuse when they don’t feel like helping their kids with something. But dads who actually are rocket scientists have more limited options. This dad’s method is called “complete denial” and works by feigning total ignorance of your former profession so that you can keep doing dad things, like mowing the lawn or dancing poorly.
It didn’t matter that this dad was in a crowded coffee shop: he needed to tell everyone there all about his daughter’s accomplishments. He was there to kick back with a latte and read her thesis. It’s even sweeter when you consider he might not understand all the details about her area of study. He just wants to show support.
This dad wasn’t messing around when it came to pizza and friendly competition with his child. He took things to another whole level by actually getting the authorities on his side, and that earns him some mad dad points. We don’t know what dad magic he worked to get out of that ticket, but it must have been amazing.
This dad’s joke proved to have some pretty dire consequences. It was too much for his boss to handle, and he needed to take it down or lose his job. But the tweet doesn’t mention what decision he made after he got this ultimatum. Some dad jokes are worth risking unemployment.
Dads sometimes seem to float through life without paying much attention to what’s going on around them. If you think your dad is going to remember the names of your friends, you’re sadly mistaken. As far as he’s concerned, kids wander in and out of the house and only some of them are his.
This dad has an ingenious life hack when he wants to eat sunflower seeds. It’s a perfect way to enjoy a snack and get the house tidied up all at the same time. You call it lazy, we call it an amazing dad hack. Also works for pomegranate seeds.
Just imagine what the cat thought, watching its dumb humans meow back and forth at one another without realizing it. He was probably curled up in a corner enjoying a nap. Now the real question is, who realized what was really happening first and how long did they let it continue?
There are two things that happen when you teach your parents about new technology: either they don’t understand it at all or it becomes their new favorite thing. This Twitter user learned the hard way not to introduce his parents to new things. In case you’ve forgotten, 2001 was almost two decades ago.
Some parents love learning new slang a little too much, so it’s better not to teach them what the kids are saying these days. Of course, even worse than them learning is learning it incorrectly. It might be a good idea to step in and correct them before they embarrass themselves.
Some kids are named after relatives who meant a lot to their parents. Others are named for the circumstances of their birth, the way they look, or after great people in history. Others, unfortunately, get named after dad jokes. Hey, at least Laura is a pretty name — maybe no one will ever know.
Did this dad ever know what a smoky eye was before his daughter taught him? We’ll say almost definitely not. But now he’s so in tune with the makeup world, he even notices the eyes on toy animals. And he’s right: that whale is rocking a very sultry eyeshadow look.
This foolish mom assumed he wasn’t prepared for the destruction of his beloved CD. What does this say about Brandon’s dad, that he was prepared for someone to throw away his CD at any time? Either this is a regular fight tactic or his wife just really, really hates Kid Rock.
When this dad found his son’s name displayed publicly on an underage wall of shame, he took it all in stride. Instead of getting angry, he just snapped a photo and, of course, tweeted all about it. His son might not be getting in trouble, but it’s a bit embarrassing to have the internet learn about your exploits.
This dad thinks he’s finally hip and with it now that he’s got some of the youngsters’ slang down. Unfortunately, he has no idea what he’s talking about. But bless his heart, he’s trying so hard. Someone, please direct this man to Urban Dictionary before he tries to make this a thing.
We’re not sure what could possibly have been going through this dad’s mind. Did he really think this enormous coat would fit his petite daughter? Earth to da,d: there are quite a few sizes between small and 3X. One thing’s for sure: his daughter will definitely be warm this winter.
There’s nothing like whipping your credit card out to pay at a store or restaurant and seeing your own gigantic face (and mustache) staring back at you. With any luck, this dad will completely own his creepy credit card. On the other hand, maybe that dead stare will be an effective money saver.
There are impulse purchases, and then there’s spending $40 on beekeeper regalia. Maybe that’s a great deal in the world of beekeeping (let’s face it, we have no idea). But the real question is … does dad actually keep bees? Or is he just an absolute master of bee puns?
Talk about making the best of a bad situation. This dad was stranded visiting his daughter because of a hurricane. But he had the perfect way to keep himself entertained while he was stuck: he would attend college classes with his daughter. While she was completely embarrassed, he had the time of his life.
“Free beer 4 hot dads,” says the sign, and in true dad fashion, they’re lined up around the block. Apparently, dad was determined to make friends while helping his daughter set up her dorm room at college. He had the perfect way to do it, too. He and his new besties look thrilled.
Apparently, this dad didn’t find getting dinner ready interesting enough, so he decided to spice it up a bit. Leaving it to dad to find a doll head and pop it right on top. We’re sure his kids will be thrilled to learn that their toys are being dismantled to decorate turkey carcasses.
Apparently, it wasn’t enough to punish his daughter by taking her phone away: this dad also really wanted to rub it in a little bit. He was diligent in his detail, even putting timestamps on each of the separate “texts.” That was a low blow, dad. That was a low…blow.
Leave it to dad to look at a sweet baby head and immediately have this thought. We appreciate the side-by-side comparison of baby head and kiwi so we really get the idea! Dad must have been a little bit bored that day while he was in charge of the kiddo.
The best thing about this whole story was how calm the dad is. When you’re a parent, you get used to long tantrums over some pretty ridiculous things. Kudos to this dad for taking it all in stride and letting his son work out his stress about those matching gloves.
Most people use Snapchat to send quick messages to friends that will fade in a few minutes’ time. This dad seems to have a more complicated use for it. He apparently has made a storyline about a happy, musical hot dog menacing his family. Tune in next time for thrilling new developments.
This dad is clearly very proud of his selfie stick and his ability to whip it out in public places to document his family. It’s also pretty clear what the rest of them think. Dad might be grinning from ear to ear, but his wife and kids are not enjoying themselves. Enough with the selfies, dad!
Lots of people feel awkward when it comes to filling out greeting cards with heartfelt messages. This dad decided not to hide it. His daughter knew his real feelings and the card already said all there was to say, so why bother? And so on and so forth, blah blah blah…
All our dads did things that we’ll probably tell our therapists about one day. Whether it was letting go of your bike before you were ready or allowing you to watch a scary movie, dads love to prank us in ways that will continue to frighten us for the rest of time. This dad took it to the next level with a creepy Mr. Bean cutout. Shiver.
This dad’s daughter recently had a relationship end. Everybody deals with breakups in different ways. Some people need alone time, a good cry, and some sad music to work out their feelings. But this dad had no patience for it, telling his daughter to get over him already because he just wasn’t a looker.
That’s right, this dad decided to go there. When his child had a broken arm, he was happy to sign his name on it — with a special wish included. That’s some dark humor right there, and we’re betting he thought he was absolutely hilarious. You’re a sick, sick man, dad.
We’re sure his daughter appreciated this text out of nowhere in the middle of the day. When her father saw an interesting sight in traffic, he just had to share it with his child. And of course, a hilarious joke occurred to him.
When it comes to their children, there’s nothing that fathers won’t do. If this man’s little girl wanted him to match with her beautiful pink bows, then he was going to have pink bows. The pigtails are a nice touch.
How long has this been etched on that hammer, waiting to be noticed? This dad just kept hoping for the day that someone would need to hang a picture or do a home repair. But if they do, they’re out of luck — that hammer is off-limits.
