Food delivery has become MASSIVE in the wake of covid. People who can’t go out (or just don’t want to) can order from in their homes and have any restaurant delivered right to their door!
While most workers spend their hours driving back and forth picking up bags of food, one decided to stop for something a little more important.
Gersen Tavares, a delivery driver who regularly picks up shifts at night, was out doing his normal thing when something amazing happened. He had just accepted his final delivery for the night and was going to finish up when he noticed something interesting.
Pulling out his phone, he started filming.
In front of his car was a little kid running down a busy highway. They were in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, and a child was in serious danger. Gerson was terrified that the little boy was going to be hit by another driver who didn’t happen to see him. It was late at night and unless you were really paying attention, the kid was easy to miss.
Parking his car in the middle of the road, Gersen made sure no cars would fly past and potentially hit the child.
Once his car was parked, he took off after him. Remember, the entire thing was caught on video! We see Gersen take off after the little kid running up the street, wearing on his diaper. The boy was on a tablet and wasn’t paying attention that he was running into oncoming traffic.
Finally, he was able to catch the boy before anything bad happened.
When asked about the event, Gerson said:
“I’m not the hero, God is the hero.”
His son was with him during the interview and agreed, but he knew that Gerson had more of a part to play than his father was willing to admit!
His son explained that while his dad honored God, he was still incredibly proud of his father.
“You were the right guy at the right place, doing the right thing,” he told his father. “And for me, what makes me more proud of him was how quick he acted, with like fast reaction. Just the way I expect my dad to be. You know. My hero. I love this guy,” he added, according to KMOV.
Even during the interview, Gerson was tearing up!
It goes to show just how tenderhearted of a man he was. After the boy was safe and in adult hands, the police were able to track down his parents. With the nature of the incident, the event spurred an investigation by the Department of Children and Family Services.
While we may never know if Gerson was able to get food to the people who ordered from him, we know that he delivered something a LOT more important!
It’s wonderful people like Gerson who remind us that the world isn’t as dark as it seems! When Gerson had stopped to get the boy, others had stopped to try and help as well. One good act always inspires another!
