Back in 2013, Utah couple, Joseph and Shanna Weight became parents through adoption. Their son Milo was born to a teen mom who reached out to them through a local adoption agency, Act of Love Adoptions. Now, five years later, she reached out to them again to ask if they were interested in adopting her second child.

“They contacted us and said, ‘Milo is going to be a big brother’ and asked if we would consider adopting his sister,'” said Joseph Weight. “At the time I was like, ‘That’s a big one.'”

The Weights were already parents not just to Milo, but also to their biological son Nash.

They had spent the last few years in contact with Milo’s birth mother, letting her know how he was doing. She had written letters to them in response, but she had never made a request like this.

“We do have a good relationship with her and just think the world of her that she was able to be so selfless and just allow us to be parents,” said Shanna Weight.

But both of the Weights felt unprepared to adopt another child.

Their younger son Nash was only 20 months old and they were hesitant to take on the responsibility. Shanna Weight was outside the United States when they got the call, but when her husband brought her up to speed, she felt nervous at the prospect.

“My first thought was like, ‘We can’t do this,’” said Shanna Weight. “But if she was supposed to come home with us, all the other stuff doesn’t matter and it will work itself out.”

They decided to turn the topic over in their minds for a weekend.

But where they hesitated, Milo was determined they would bring his new sibling home. He was over the moon the moment he learned that his birth mother was pregnant, and told his parents in no uncertain terms that they would be bringing the new baby back to live with them.

Milo and Nash’s baby sister Onni Pearl was born on February 25, 2019.

She was healthy and happy, and her adoptive parents were able to take her home just two days later.

Now, Onni is at home with two adoring older brothers and her parents, who can’t get enough of her.

But Shanna Weight says they never forget to be grateful to their children’s biological mother. She says that they were humbled by her trust of them and incredibly happy to be chosen twice.

“I felt very grateful that she would give us the opportunity to also parent one of [Milo’s] siblings,” Shanna Weight said. “I think how courageous [their birth mom] was to recognize that they needed something more than she could give them. She was very selfless in what she did.”

Before Onni was born, her birth mother came to visit them and made plans to deliver at a nearby hospital.

She was thrilled to see how well Milo was doing and felt confident and happy that her second child would be raised by the Weights as well.
