However, several years ago, she won the “baby lottery” when she found herself sitting next to a pregnant woman on a plane.

You see, Samantha Snipes was flying from Arkansas to North Carolina, eight months pregnant, but her flight was canceled. So, she ended up on another plane, the one Phipps was on. And, guess what- she sat right next to her.

Snipes had found out that she was pregnant a few months earlier, but the news didn’t make her very happy since she was in an abusive relationship at the time.

She had reached a point that she couldn’t even love herself, let alone a baby. So, she only felt confused and alone.

“After finally gaining the strength to leave my abusive relationship, I found myself in a very dark and lonely place mentally,” Snipes told PEOPLE at the time. “I knew I loved this life inside of me, but I didn’t love myself or the place I was in at that time. I loved [my son] so much and that’s why I knew he deserved better.”

The young mother-to-be was considering adoption, but she was still not sure and, when she met Phipps on the plane something about her made Snipes feel an instant connection with her.

The women talked about Samantha’s situation and what she had been through, and Phipps took the chance to give the stranger her number just in case she ended up deciding to give the baby up for adoption.

During her trip to North Carolina, Snipes eventually gave birth to baby Vaughn three weeks early, and the first person she thought of calling when she was still in the hospital was Phipps.

She had felt such a strong connection to the stranger she had only met for a few hours on a plane that she was the first person to call after she gave birth. She was not sure what was going to follow, but she knew that Phipps would help her feel better and she was sure that she could take good care of her baby during that stressful time.

So, when Phipps went to the hospital to see her, Snipes confirmed that she was not only a good friend, but she also had all the qualities of a good mother. So, she asked her to adopt her baby.

“I was in absolute shock and started crying and shaking,” Phipps told PEOPLE of Snipes’ offer. “I was holding Vaughn at that time and could not believe the miracle that was taking place.”

Two weeks later, Phipps officially became baby Vaughn’s mother.

Since then, Snipes and Phipps have been good friends. In 2018, Snipes shared that she feels Phipps is a sister to her- and Samantha regularly visits Temple and Vaughn, and they have a great time together.

We are sure that these two amazing women will give the baby all the love he deserves and more.
