Although birthdays seem to feel less important the older you get, it’s always a nice excuse to gather your loved ones together and celebrate the occasion.
This grandad’s wonderful family pulled out all the stops to make him feel special on his 60th birthday. They went to every effort to show him that he was appreciated – and it wasn’t just the birthday cake, the decorations, or birthday song that made this particular day that much more special.
There was just one problem.
Grandad’s best friend was unable to attend the special occasion, but the family was able to arrange a video recording from him that they planned to play for him on the big day.
Even more impressive, the entire family had managed to keep the surprise under wraps for weeks.
After all the presents were opened, Grandad was lead to the living room for the big reveal.
Grandchildren, children, aunts, uncles, and siblings gathered in front of the TV and began to play the recording from the man’s best friend. When Grandad saw his friend Ben on the screen he got really excited.
“Oh, how cool is that?!” Grandad said.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when everyone heard the heartfelt message.
“Hey brother, I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday, I know that you’re having a big party there. Sorry that we weren’t able to make it out to join you for it. Sixty years old! Holy smokes.”
The man began to talk about how he was sorry that he couldn’t be there, and how much he missed his best friend. The birthday boy tried to contain the tears that were slowly rolling down his face.
But there was something strange about the situation. If you look to the right of where the man is sitting, a few of the children are trying to suppress their giggles. Something else is unfolding.
“We’re not that far apart, just turned 50 a year ago, but I’m blessed to have you in my life and blessed to call you my best friend. I know a lot of guys don’t have that relationship with other guys but… Gosh I’m not very good at this video stuff but I just want to say I love you and I really want to wish you a happy birthday.”
The kids at the party clearly know something we don’t, and they are struggling to keep it to themselves. The girl on the right keeps leaning forward to look at the birthday boy and then looks behind her, at the other family members.
But, thankfully, the man doesn’t notice the kids’ odd behavior.
All he can focus on is the gut-wrenching video message from his best friend as he becomes more and more emotional.
“You’re an amazing man. I admire you, I totally respect you, and just thank god for you. That’s what I do,” the man’s friend says, his voice cracking
The birthday boy wipes the tears from his eyes and the video comes to a close.
The rest of the family clap and then shuffle around the room nervously… because the biggest surprise is still coming!
