You’ve heard many incredible stories about pregnancy and childbirth, like a woman complaining of stomach pains in the ER and finding out that she’s already in labor (not even thinking she was pregnant, to begin with) or giving birth to quintuplets. It’s amazing what can happen in the human body in nine months.

This story opens our eyes to another rare occurrence in pregnancy called superfetation.

VeryWellFamily.com defines superfetation as “the formation of a fetus while another fetus is already present in the uterus.” It’s when another pregnancy happens to her during an existing one. It occurs when two ova from two separate menstrual cycles are released, fertilized, and implanted in the uterus.

Who knew one could get pregnant while already pregnant?

Cara Winhold didn’t even think this was possible. Still healing from three miscarriages, she felt a bit uneasy when she went to her doctor for an ultrasound appointment. She was five weeks pregnant then. She recalls how she hated feeling that sense of doom when she walked in; she was trying her best to be optimistic about everything. Because of her resolution to look at each situation through a more hopeful lens, she managed to stop herself from panicking when the sonographer wasn’t able to detect a heartbeat.

“It was still early. I knew I couldn’t lose hope. It’s not uncommon to not see a heartbeat at five weeks,” she told TODAY Parents.

They were asked to return after two weeks. When they did, she was more anxious than ever, saying she was petrified, and she recalls sitting in the doctor’s office, shaking. But things suddenly turned around in the most surprising way.

Not only was the sonographer able to detect a strong heartbeat – a second fetus was seen!

Cara and Blake were in total shock. They didn’t realize this was possible and never imagined it happening to them. After confirming that this was a case of superfetation, Cara’s doctor estimated that the babies were conceived roughly a week apart.

Cara and her husband, Blake, were over the moon. On October 25, 2021, they welcomed their twins, Colson and Cayden, into the world.

While there was a significant difference in the babies’ weight, with Colson weighing 6 pounds and 5 ounces and Cayden weighing 4 pounds and 9 ounces, the twins were perfectly healthy. Cara shares,

“It’s dramatic how much bigger Colson is, still. He’s eight months old but wearing 24-month clothing. Cayden is wearing 6-9 month sizes.”

The proud mom sees how wonderfully different the two are. Colson was the first to sit up and crawl, while Cayden was more verbal. She’s optimistic that it won’t take long for Cayden to catch up to Colson.

This heartwarming story will convince you that nothing is impossible. From dealing with the heartbreak of three miscarriages to being surprised with the news of another baby appearing in her womb, Cara is in for a beautiful adventure. Hats off to Cara and her husband for remaining strong and hopeful throughout everything and making sure all their children are loved and taken care of.
