Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong was a legendary New Orleans singer and trumpeter who had been making records since 1923.

It was in 1967 when he released “What A Wonderful World”. The song would become the biggest-selling song of Armstrong’s long and storied career.

The beloved classic was written in 1967 by George David Weiss and George Douglas, an alias for Bob Thiele, who was Armstrong’s producer at ABC Records.

Thiele’s 2005 book, What A Wonderful World: A Lifetime Of Recordings, explains that the song was meant to be a reassurance for America in the late sixties.

It was a problematic time defined by Thiele as, “the deepening national traumas of the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam, racial strife, and turmoil everywhere.”

The song faced a problem in the person of Larry Newton, the president of ABC. Newton hated it but despite his protests, Armstrong secretly recorded the song in Las Vegas after a show in September 1967.

“What a wonderful world” flopped in America, but in Europe, the song reached No. 1 selling 600,000 copies during a 29-week chart run.

The song was back in the charts when it was played in the hit movie Good Morning Vietnam. A new generation of listeners began to fall in love with the song, and that love was passed on to their kids.

And to another generation, as is evident with this little singer.
